Batches start on the first Monday falling within the month. Two exceptions: the December 2026 batch starts Wednesday 25 November 2026 and the December 2027 batch starts Wednesday 24 November 2027.

What this preparation is for
MEOL candidates come from a dual-purpose or yacht engineering background, and the oral reflects that: practical duty, practical machinery, practical consequences.
This course prepares you for the handover of UMS and bridge-control duty, the preparation and testing of machinery for sea, the pumping and pollution-prevention systems you are responsible for, and the immediate actions expected after a fire or accident.
It is preparation for the MCA oral examination. The MCA conducts the examination and makes the certificate decision.

The MEOL route requires qualifying service. Confirm your exact position with the MCA before booking.
- 36 months of qualifying service as a dual-purpose deck and engineer officer, or
- 24 months of qualifying service as a yacht engineer.
- Check your notice of eligibility and documentary evidence with the MCA before committing to a course date.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency conducts the oral examination itself, sets eligibility, and makes the Certificate of Competency decision. We do not book, conduct or guarantee the outcome of your examination, and no preparation course can promise a pass. Confirm your eligibility and notice of eligibility requirements directly with the MCA before booking.
