Global Shipping at a Turning Point — What It Means for Careers and the Future of the Sea

The shipping world is shifting fast — and if you’re thinking about a maritime career, now’s a powerful moment to ride the wave.

🌍 Turbulence on the Markets, Pressure from Above

Recent data from UNCTAD warn that global seaborne trade is facing a rough patch in 2025. Growth projections sit at a barely-noticeable 0.5%. That means freight volumes, demand, and consequently job availability in certain segments may see more competition than before.

Meanwhile, container-shipping rates are sliding. According to the latest from Drewry Supply Chain Advisors, the benchmark price for a 40-ft container dropped to $1,806 — a 2% dip in one week. That’s the result of softer demand and increased vessel capacity.

What this really means: the days of stable margins and growing fleets might be over for a while. Shipping companies will need to adapt — and many will look for people who understand this new reality.

Newbuild Boom — But Differently Shaped

At the same time, we’re seeing a surge in fresh ship orders. For example, Zodiac Maritime (UK-based) reportedly signed on for new Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) at a Chinese yard.

And globally, yards across East Asia are locking in orders for tankers, bulkers, and container ships, with delivery dates stretching to 2028–2029.

So while demand may wobble today, many owners still bet on a long-term rebound — meaning opportunities for new officers, shore-staff, technical crews, and trained seafarers could return sooner than expected.

Sustainability Isn’t a Buzzword — It’s the New Normal

The industry isn’t just about cargo and contracts anymore. Decarbonization and regulatory pressure are reshaping everything. The push for alternative fuels (LNG, bio-LNG, methanol, ammonia) is gaining traction in 2025 as companies try to comply with low-emission goals.

Also, global efforts toward tighter environmental rules and cleaner operations remain centre-stage. Firms and crews that understand sustainable shipping, energy transition, and emissions compliance — like what we teach at Glasgow Maritime Academy — will be in demand.

What This Means If You’re Eyeing a Maritime Career

Competition will grow for traditional cargos and routes, especially in container shipping.

Newbuilding and fleet renewal present opportunities for well-trained cadets and officers.

Demand for specialists — those familiar with green fuels, compliance, and sustainable practices — will likely rise.

Flexibility and adaptability will become key traits for anyone entering the industry.

If you’re serious about a maritime career, this volatility and transformation is great news — but only if you prepare the right way.
