For your first private session with us, we usually recommend starting with a gentle mock exam. This helps identify your weaker areas and gives you the opportunity to begin practicing speaking out loud.
This approach allows us to cover a broad range of the syllabus, giving you a clear understanding of what to focus on before the exam. That said, it’s your time, and we’re happy to focus on whatever matters most to you.
The most effective way to succeed in your orals is by working in a group, and we believe this approach greatly benefits our sessions as well.
While many prefer individual sessions, you’ll gain valuable insights by listening to and correcting your friends’ answers, ensuring everyone is aligned. Plus, bringing a few people along makes it significantly more cost-effective.
Absolutely! If you like the idea of a group setting but don’t have your own group to join, we offer small-group sessions you might enjoy. These run weekly and cover COLREGs and General Knowledge content for all levels.
Each session is limited to 12 people, lasts two hours, and at just £45 per session, provides an affordable way to work with one of our team.
We generally suggest scheduling your first one-to-one session about three to four weeks before the exam, though this depends on your available time and whether you’re revising while working; if so, giving yourself extra time is recommended.
A common mistake is wanting to feel completely ‘ready’ before starting with us, but the best approach is to see our support and practicing verbalising as an essential part of becoming ‘ready’.
Often, you won’t feel fully prepared as the exam approaches, especially if revising alone, which can lead to delaying help until it’s too late. You might also reach a point where you feel ready, only to discover through a mock that you’ve overfocused on one area while neglecting another, leaving insufficient time to address gaps confidently before the exam.
Before the pandemic, we offered an even split between online and face-to-face sessions, but during the pandemic, we moved entirely online. While we’re open to face-to-face sessions now, the vast majority of our sessions remain online because they are just as effective.
Online sessions save you travel time, making them a convenient choice. That said, if you prefer face-to-face sessions, please get in touch and we’ll do our best to arrange something, as our tutors are located across the UK and not limited to Glasgow.
If you haven’t worked with us earlier in your preparation or have only just discovered us, we’re happy to offer a one-off mock exam to test your readiness just before the exam. However, we still recommend allowing as much time as possible afterward to address any weak areas.
With that in mind, we suggest leaving at least two to three days between your first mock and the exam. Many candidates who book a mock the day before find there’s no opportunity to make improvements if it doesn’t go as planned.
Although we’re often asked about this, we haven’t created a fixed prep course because we believe the bespoke and flexible nature of our services is what makes us stand out. That said, we frequently design tailored prep packages for clients, so please get in touch to explore the possibilities.
By offering sessions on a pay-as-you-go basis, our clients aren’t locked into unnecessary courses or packages. This approach removes large financial commitments and time constraints, allowing you to start early or book a one-off session to test yourself—and us—without pressure.
