This course enables candidates to achieve Class 1 fishing engineer certification by the MCA Oral examination route. Candidates will receive tuition and guided study in preparation for the MCA Oral examination.
The course will be based on
1.Managerial responsibilities of a Certificated Engineer Officer
2.Management of engines and pressure vessels, electrical machinery.
3.Prevention of fire, methods of firefighting at sea.
4.Supervisory duties, work to be done in port, periodical examination of the working parts.
5.Constructional details, arrangements and management of refrigeration plant.
6.Construction, arrangement and operation of steering systems.
7.Construction details and principles of action of pumps.
8.General requirements for pumping systems.
9.Working principles and constructional details of marine diesel engines, together with their ancillary equipment such as Gearboxes, Clutches, Thrust Bearings and Transmission Systems. Operation and maintenance of diesel engines.
10.Determination of engine power.
11.Starting and reversing systems.
12.Properties of fuel and lubricating oils used in diesel engines.
13.The fuel system.
14.The lubricating oil system.
15.Operation, testing and fault rectification of automatic control and alarm panels.
16.Basic hydraulic circuits and their maintenance.
17.Construction, safe operation and maintenance of deck machinery.
18.Knowledge of the Code of Safe Working Practices for Fishing Vessels in machinery rooms and other enclosed spaces.
19.Knowledge of appropriate M notices.
Although presentation of other topics may be arranged where the whole group should benefit. Tutorials will be delivered as formal lectures and/or demonstrations as appropriate, supplemented by group discussion, question and answer sessions and directed study.
Candidates are also encouraged to make full use of other learning resources, including the on-site nautical library, Internet access, training software and feedback from previous candidates.
Each candidate gets a free access to our moodle online learning environment and a mock orals at the end of the course. This helps them repair any damage before going for the actual orals.
